Mining History: Mine
Shafts of Michigan Part 2
Michigan had a large variety of mine shaft designs. Construction
styles and materials also varied. Many shafts used large wood
timbers, others used steel framing, and many were enclosed with wood
or metal siding or concrete walls. Some of the photos were taken of
headframes under construction. Many headframes were built over
railroad tracks for direct shipping of ore, and they may have had trestles
that extended to stockpiles to allow for seasonal shipment and for
sorting of grades, and also for waste rock piles.
The Menominee Range of Iron and Dickinson counties iron ore production
through 1974 totalled 311 million
tons.
