Michigan Abandoned Mine
Lands Inventory
Michigan had four major metallic mining ranges,
the Copper Mining District of Keweenaw, Houghton, Ontonagon counties
(and some explorations in Gogebic), the Marquette Iron Range of Marquette
and Baraga counties, the Menominee Iron Range of Dickinson and Iron
counties, and the Gogebic Iron Range of Gogebic county. In addition
there were gold mines (and copper and other metallic explorations)
in Marquette county and gold exploring in Gogebic county. Silver explorations
also operated in Ontonagon and Baraga counties. |
NOTICE:
For any questions about abandoned mines in Michigan or if you find
a newly caved-in area: Consult your local county mine inspector.
The mine inspectors have inventory
and maps of abandoned mines and the knowledge and expertise about
the local area. |

Even though the old mine sites are inspected by
the county mine inspector, some old mines are still unknown and
unmarked. Many mines were discovered and mined out before there
were any regulations. Even when old mine sites are known and inspected,
there is no guarantee that a new cave-in may not occur the next
day. Therefore, be careful around former mining areas. Do not cross
fences. Be suspicious of any location where there are old rotten
fence posts and rusty barbed wire fences. Obey the signs that read
"Keep Out" and other warnings. Stay away from "Caving Ground."

The Inventory was
prepared by the Mineral Technology Research Group,
Department of Mining Engineering, Michigan Technological University,
Houghton, Michigan. The inventory
project reports were finalized in early 1999, and
consist of two parts, an inventory of all of the
Abandoned Underground Mines and a report of those
locations needing safety remedies.
