Underground in the Michigan Tech Experimental Mine

The Michigan Tech Mining Engineering program conducts exercises at the Experimental Mine across the Portage Lake waterway in Ripley, near Hancock, Michigan. The mine is an adit into the hillside that connected to the 7th level of the Quincy Mine, a former copper mine that was 9600' in depth with 93 levels across with an underground mined area extent of 2 square miles and over 20 shafts and adits. The mine and hoist are within the Keweenaw National Historic Park. Guided tours are offered along with a summer season tram car ride down the hillside. See our Mine Shafts of Michigan Part 5 For more about the Quincy Mine
