Mine Shafts of Michigan
Mining History:
Mine Shafts of Michigan Part 1
Michigan has a deep and rich history of mining. More than 800 underground
mines
were developed in Michigan.
Most of these mines were developed with shafts. The shafts were
sunk vertically or at
various angles into the ground.
Some underground mines were developed with horizontal
adits into a hillside.
These photos are a sampling of the shaft structures, headframes and shaft
houses of some of the underground mines in Michigan.
The Marquette Mineral Range was the first of the iron ranges
developed in the 1840s. Of the gold ventures, only 2 were
commercially successful.
Iron Mines have continuously operated productively on the Marquette Range
for over 156 years.
